These are a few shots from my web video series about Guntur, a rare Sumatran tiger at the Smithsonian National Zoo. I filmed and edited this for National Geographic in the spring 2012.
Guntur is a male Sumatran tiger who lives at the National Zoo in Washington, DC. In 2012, he will leave his home and move to Japan as part of a breeding program. I document his routines in preparation for his departure as part of a web video project for National Geographic.
As a Center for Environmental Filmmaking Scholar, I joined my classmate Sarah Gulick and my professor Sandy Cannon-Brown to shoot a documentary trailer about the 'Guardians of the Everglades' in Florida. Some of these production stills were taken with an infrared camera. Photos: Connie Bransilver and Nicholas Petrucci.
A two-week trip to one of the most strange yet beautiful natural environments cannot be described in a few sentences, let alone with a photo album. Here are a few moments in the Galápagos Islands in May 2011.
Three classmates and I traveled to into the Amazon of Ecuador to produce a promotional video for the Napo Wildlife Center (NWC). This was an incredible experience, especially thanks to all the wonderful people who work at NWC. My talented friend and colleague Erin Greenawald (erinaceously.wordpress.com) took these pictures, except for the last eight images, those are mine.
I traveled to Santa Barbara, California, where I shot a promotional video, went to a film festival and had a car accident. Unfortunately, I forgot to bring my still camera, so the iPhone preserved a few memorable moments.
A walk to the National Zoo resulted in a a few shaky pictures of a tiger and some flowers.
My awesome professor Maggie Stogner brought me along on a shoot for National Geographic in the archives of Penn Museum in Philadelphia. Throughout this day, I was assisting the cinematographer Doug Gritzmacher.
Through my internship at the National Park Service, I was invited on a tour of the East Wing of the White House, which had just been decorated for Christmas. I could invite a friend so I brought Dan. This was a fun experience and a great ending to my first semester in DC!
I was invited to the first Thanksgiving of my life in the home of Don Fish and Sarah Menke-Fish, together with their two children and their friends Debbie and Kurt. And I was very, very full.
After a quick visit to Marshall's, our apartment finally has decorations on the walls.
Together with thousands of other people, my friends and I enjoyed Jon Stewart's and Stephen Colbert's Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear on the National Mall. More sanity to the people!
My National Park Service colleagues and I traveled to Catoctin Mountain Park in Maryland, where we camped for the night to film the outstanding sunrise in the fall colors.
Actor Edward Norton ('Fight Club,' 'Italian Job,' 'American History X') visited American University to promote his new movie 'Stone' and participated in a panel where he took questions from the students.
Mixed bag: My sister leaves DC and I learn how to handle a real film camera.
Mixed bag from September: My dear sister and her friend Helena came to visit me, I saw a cheetah in DC, and worked behind-the-scenes re-creating 'Casablanca.'
Mixed bag: My new bed is assembled and I recently took my camera out into Glover Archbold Park, which is right where we live. It is very beautiful there!
Anika and I made a weekend trip to Manahawkin, New Jersey, to see Pete and Andy.
Amazingly sweet Jason donated surplus furniture to David, Anika and me, who happily stocked up for the new apartment!
David and I prepare for the big moving process by taking a trip to IKEA.
During my first week in DC, I participated in two different introduction days at school; one for international students and one for SOC students.
My first day in DC was very productive. For example, I had a look at the American University campus and my future home on Fulton Street.
The best day of my life: the day I met Serj Tankian from System of a Down! He played at Trädgårn in Gothenburg on August 9, 2010, and I was one of the lucky few who met him and received autographs before the concert.
In this album, I collect single photos that are not part of a specific photo album.
